India Post issued this ₹10 stamp on 14 December 2016 for the birth centenary of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya (1916–1968), thinker of Integral Humanism and leader of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh. He was born on 25 September 1916 at Dhankia in Rajasthan. He lost his father before he was three and his mother before he was eight, and grew up at his maternal grandfather’s home in hard circumstances.

A Brilliant Student

He went to school at Kota and Rajgarh and matriculated from Sikar, standing first in the board examination, for which the Maharaja of Sikar gave him a gold medal and a scholarship. At Pilani he topped the intermediate examination in 1937, the first Birla College student to do so, and G. D. Birla too gave him a medal and a scholarship. He graduated in the first division from Sanatan Dharma College, Kanpur, in 1939 and studied English literature at St John’s College, Agra; he passed the provincial civil service examination but chose not to join, preferring a life of service.
