About this stamp

An Unsung Hero

India Post issued this ₹5 stamp on 23 December 2013 for Gulab Singh Lodhi, one of the unsung heroes of the freedom movement. He was born in 1903 at Fatehpur Chaurasi in Unnao district, Uttar Pradesh, the son of Ram Ratan Singh Lodhi, a farmer, and grew up as the freedom movement reached its height.

In August 1935 he joined a procession in Lucknow that marched to Aminabad Park to hoist the tricolour. The park was surrounded by British troops to stop it. Defying them, Gulab Singh Lodhi climbed a tree with the flag, and as he hoisted it he was shot dead by a British officer.

The stamp was designed by Sankha Samanta; India Security Press, Nashik printed 0.32 million, 0.01 million of them for the proponent.
