Beat Plastic Pollution
India was the global host of World Environment Day on 5 June 2018, and the theme set by UN Environment was plastic pollution. India Post marked the day with four ₹5 stamps and a ₹20 miniature sheet on the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution”: each stamp sets a heap of plastic waste against people enjoying clean surroundings. Suresh Kumar designed them, and Security Printing Press, Hyderabad printed 6 lakh of each stamp and 1.1 lakh miniature sheets.
World Environment Day has been observed since 1974, and India had hosted it once before, in 2011, on the theme of forests. The brochure points to the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016, which raised the minimum thickness of plastic carry bags from 40 to 50 microns and made producers responsible for collecting back their plastic waste.
