About this stamp
Gandhian Heritage in Modern India
India Post issued two stamps on 15 August 2019, Independence Day, under the title “Gandhian Heritage in Modern India”, during the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi. Both designs come from a nationwide photography competition on that theme.
On the Stamp
This ₹25 stamp shows the prize-winning photograph of the “Gyarah Murti” in New Delhi: eleven statues of Gandhi and others leading the Dandi March of 1930. The group stands on a ridge, Gandhi in front with his staff, followed by men and women in a line. The companion ₹15 stamp shows the statue of Gandhi with a village girl at Velha Goa.
The Dandi March was Gandhi’s protest against the salt tax: in March 1930 he and his companions walked to the sea at Dandi to make salt. Nenu Gupta designed the stamps from the competition entries; 500,000 of each were printed by wet offset at the Security Printing Press, Hyderabad.
