About this stamp

Gandhian Heritage in Modern India

India Post issued two stamps on 15 August 2019, Independence Day, under the title “Gandhian Heritage in Modern India”, during the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi. Both designs come from a nationwide photography competition on that theme; the first three winners were Kaushik Majumdar, Ritesh Raj and Rodrigues Carmo Jesus Jose.

On the Stamp

This ₹15 stamp shows one of the prize-winning photographs: the statue of Mahatma Gandhi with a local village girl at Velha Goa (Old Goa), under the trees. The companion ₹25 stamp shows the Dandi March statues in New Delhi.

Gandhi in Modern India

The brochure traces Gandhi’s presence in the country today: khadi, promoted by the Khadi and Village Industries Commission since 1956 and now worn by leading designers; films from Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi (1982) to Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006); biographies by D. G. Tendulkar and by Pyarelal and Sushila Nayar; temples to him at Sambalpur and elsewhere; the Gandhi Memorial at Kanyakumari; and countless statues, roads and post offices named after him.

Nenu Gupta designed the stamps from the competition entries; 500,000 of each were printed by wet offset at the Security Printing Press, Hyderabad.
